I need some guidance as to the lakes in proximity to Finland. We' be coming up the third week in June and although I have fished Lake Superior, I would like to take a crack at some of the other bodies of water within say 20 miles of Finland. I'm basically interested in Wallyeye and Northern. We just love the area and it's remarkable what a short nine hour drive can mean in the "lay of the land". Thanks for any help. Yours truly;

Randy Renshaw

Greetings! I was stationed at Finland AFS (756th Radar Sqdn) between 1960 and 1962. I remember very cold winters and very short summers. I learned to play cribbage and eat polish sausage there. I also learned the sport of curling there. I'm delighted to see the sport now in the Winter Olympics. ThanX for the trip down memory lane: good website.

I was stationed at Finland AFS in the 756th Radar Sq from Dec 1976 to May 1978. I had a wonderful time there. I married a local girl from Silver Bay (Gwen Olson)and moved back south. I have been back to visit the AFS twice, once in 1997 and again in 1999 and I even went into my old room in the dorms. I didn't know I missed the place so much. I would really like to move back if I could find a reasonable place to live. This is the BEST KEPT SECRET IN THE WORLD. Email me if you want to discuss Finland.

Hello, When is the Finn Fest and Booya Festival? What else can you tell me about it?

Jeff States | FL , USA | 08/22/2005
Almost 40 years ago (1967-1968) I was stationed at Finland Air Force Station while in the US Air Force. The radar station was closed in 1980 as technology moved forward and the cold war, which was the reason for the Finland radar site, was only to last for another nine years when the Berlin wall fell in 1989. I remember Finland as a beautiful, pristine area that hopefully still exists today.

As a descendent of the Nikula and Kalender families, I have always taken an interest in the history of the area. I have not visited in many years, but hope to in the near future.

Thanks to everyone in Finland for making our valentines weekend fantastic!! We had a very comfortable stay at the Maple Grove. We had way too much fun driving Deb and Larry crazy at Our Place. We also enjoyed stops at Wildhurst and Four Seasons. We danced Saturday night away at Nine Mile with Pork Chop. Can't wait to come back! Thanks Again, Ann and Kris

A nice and informative web site! I'm visiting Minnesota as a Finnish citizen (from Finland Europe) and went up to Two Harbor, but did not have time to visit US Finland. Thanks for keeping the site updated.

Michele Goerdt | MN , USA | 04/04/2004
I was pleased with what I seen on this site, I lived in finland for 19 year until July when I moved to Two harbors to be closer to school. the people in finland are great and really friendly. But you forgot to include a picture of St. Urho. I know you spoke of it. The town may be small be we have spirit. If you visit there i hope you enjoy your stay and have fun

I want to wish all the people a Happy St. Urho's Day from us. We also celebrate this day in Ashland, Wisconsin at the local Nursing Home here. Court Manor. We put on a show. Iplay my guitar and try to make up songs. It is fun! The nurses etc. bring grape juice there and cake or cookies for us and the residents. My family help me, my grand kids, one daughter etc. But it is fun, just to have a holiday like this. I am not that good at the Finnish language, but I am proud to be Finnish. Take great pride in alot of the Finns ways, like paying their war debt back, and fighting the Russians, we heard, in those wars etc. We all call that sisu, and one has to have it, yesterday and today and tomorrow too! Nice website. I fished throughout the Finland area in the 60's and 70's with an old guy named Haveri. I am assuming the homestead picture is his family. He had quite the stories about the lumber camps and growing up in that area in the early 1900's.

Scott Schaeffer | IA , USA | 01/20/2004
I lived in Finland as a young boy from 1977 - 1979 at what was, at the time, Finland Air Force Station (my stepfather was in the Air Force). The Air Force Station was closed shortly after we moved, which is why we had to move in the first place. I spent 2nd, 3rd and 4th grades of school in Silver Bay. Ever since I left, I've longed to return to Finland and the surrounding area, to rekindle fond childhood memories and to once again enjoy the wonderful landscape, the wilderness and the people which make up northeastern Minnesota. Having stumbled upon www.finlandmnus.com, I'm seeing pictures of things that I haven't seen in over 20 years - those which have been mere fuzzy memories in my mind. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for developing and hosting such a great website!

I just happened upon your website while researching information for a BWCAW trip this coming summer and thinking about north shore real estate. I had my first teaching job in Silver Bay in 1976-77. I was the Special Ed. teacher at the Elementary School. Unfortunately I lost my job as times were tough then and I was a first year teacher. Since that time I have worked in the Silver Valley schools in northern Idaho. Anyway, I just wanted to say hello. Even though I've now been in Idaho for about half my life, Minnesota will always be home. Some day I hope to go back home to stay.

Nice to know you're up there still...my Mothers family is from that area...Christianson...lived in a small wood cabin that was still standing in the 1970's There were 5 girls and one son. Eventually, all of the girls moved to Duluth w/ families..as did son Alfred. Many relatives in Duluth area, but don't know much about Mom's family. (she passed away in '93). Any one know of local family history ? Many thanks!
